Résumé: Teaching is not an easy task at all, teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL) encounter many difficulties in making students involved with the lesson, especially in classes with mixed abilities. A mixed-ability class combines students with varied qualities, competences, levels, skills, and needs. The present study examines the issues of mixed-ability classes in the context of English as a Foreign Language education in Algerian secondary schools. In addition, it aims to raise teacher’s awareness about different levels of students in the classroom and strategies to cope with them. It seeks to explore the perceptions of teachers and students and practices in the mixed-ability classes. Quantitative data were collected from students and teachers' questionnaires to reach the objectives designed for this study. An investigation was made of fieldwork undertaken with EFL teachers and students’ from two secondary schools in the province of Medea. The results were obtained from a sample of 13 teachers and 40 students. It was found that both students and teachers should make effort to overcome the challenges of teaching and learning in mixed-ability classes. To conclude, the research data asserted the existence of mixed-ability classes and the different strategies adopted by teachers to overcome the issue even if they face some problems.
