Résumé: The current study sought to reveal the relationship between mental alertness and self-learning among first-year students of a common social sciences, by knowing the level of self-learning and mental alertness, as well as revealing the significance of the differences in mental alertness and self-learning according to the variables of gender and the nature of residence in the study sample, and to delve into In this study, we relied on the descriptive approach, with its correlational and comparative methods, which are appropriate for this approach. The study sample consisted of (131) male and female students from the first year of common social sciences, which were selected in a simple random way, and the study tools were applied, which were the mental alertness scale designed by “Ahlam Abdullah” in (2013) and the self-learning scale designed By “Wallaf Ibtisam” (2021), after confirming its psychometric properties, to calculate validity and reliability coefficients, and after collecting data through the basic study. It was processed using the Statistical Program for the Social Sciences (SPSS) in its version (26), and the study concluded with the following results The level of mental alertness among the study sample is high.1 The level of self-learning among the study sample is high.2 3.The nature of the correlation between mental alertness and self-learning is direct in the study sample 4.There are no statistically significant differences in mental alertness among the study sample due to the variables of gender, nature of residence, and the interaction between them. 5.There are no statistically significant differences in self-learning among the study sample due to the variables of gender, nature of residence, and the interaction between them. The results obtained were interpreted in light of the theoretical heritage and previous studies related to the two variables of the current study, and the study was concluded with a set of suggestions directed to the educational staff at the University of Kasdi Merbah - Ouargla - and the members of the study sample.
