Teaching Culture As A Fifth Skill In Efl Classes:
Résumé: This thesis examines the importance of integrating culture as a fifth skill in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classes. It specifically focuses on the effectiveness of authentic materials and speaking exchange activities in enhancing students' cultural awareness. The study adopts a descriptive analytical method, targeting EFL students and teachers at Yahia Fares University. A sample of 25 L1 students and EFL teachers participated in an online questionnaire and interview, providing qualitative and quantitative data. The findings suggest that integrating culture as a fifth skill enhances students' language proficiency and overall cultural competence. Teaching literary texts and utilizing authentic materials were found to increase students' awareness of foreign language culture. Additionally, engaging in speaking exchange activities proved effective in promoting cultural understanding and communication skills. The study emphasizes the need for EFL learners to develop cultural competence alongside the traditional language skills. It recommends incorporating authentic materials and implementing speaking exchange activities as essential strategies in EFL instruction to foster students' cultural awareness. The research findings contribute to the ongoing discourse on language education, highlighting the significance of integrating culture as a vital component of language learning and teaching.
