Language, Thought And Culture In Mark Twain’s The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer: A Literary Analysis

Résumé: This research examines the most important elements language, thought, and culture and their great influence on our way of thinking and living in society. This study attempts to clarify the impact of background of the author on his way of writing and thinking by using his own dialect and tradition in his piece of writing. The connection between language and thought always comes to a question especially when we study second language because the two languages used influence people’s thought. Yet it has been one of the most important topics for humans to understand the nature of human cognition. It is clear that language and culture are closely related to each other. This present dissertation is an analysis of Mark Twain’s novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer published in 1876. The story depicts the life of a young boy growing up in a Mississippi river town. Since that time, Tom Sawyer has come to be viewed as a complex work addressed to both children and adults. The ultimate aim of this study is to explain how language, thought, and culture could influence the writer and it appeared mainly in his novel and any piece of writing.
