The Role Of The Comic Book Captain America: The New Deal (2002) In The Social Costruction Of Terrorism After The 9/11 Attacks
Résumé: The 9/11 attacks on the Twin Towers in 2001 represent the archetype of the modern event; they have affected American policy domestically and internationally. Marvel Comics set forth Captain America as the embodiment of the American values of freedom and democracy par excellence. In addition, he is the personification of the United States as the mythical hero expressing American devotion to global peace. Captain America, as a soft power, flags up certainties about terrorism by participating in its social construction. The fictional work participates in the profiling of the terrorist, and in legitimizing the government’s policies in the Middle East as an inevitable heroic moment to defend the nation. The comic book Captain America: The New Deal (2002) puts perfectly into words and images real events which make the work relevant to the study of international relations. This paper seeks to shed light on the power of the comic book to play a social-constructivist role by strengthening the post 9/11 American social doctrine.
