Freedom And Identity In Contemporary Algerian Women's Literature
Résumé: Abstract This paper examines the exploration of freedom and identity in the works of Algerian women writers, particularly in the context of post-colonialism, feminism, and globalization. Four prominent authors are central to this study: Assia Djebar (with works such as "Fantasia: An Algerian Cavalcade" and "Women of Algiers in Their Apartment"), Malika Mokeddem ("The Forbidden Woman" and "In the Name of My Mother"), Ahlam Mosteghanemi ("Memory in the Flesh" and "The Bridges of Constantine"), and Leïla Sebbar ("The Seine Was Red: Paris, October 1961" and "Sherazade Trilogy"). This research analyzes the literary techniques utilized by these writers—including narration, language, symbolism, and intertextuality—to articulate their personal and collective experiences of oppression, resistance, and emancipation. The paper contends that these Algerian women writers have forged a distinctive and diverse contemporary Algerian literary landscape that subverts dominant historical, cultural, and identity narratives. Additionally, the paper examines the implications of their works for the comprehension of Algerian society, particularly the role of women.
