French In Algeria Between Arabisation Policy And English Globalisation
Résumé: This study is conducted to know what sustains the use of French in Algeria, despite hard attempts to generalise the policy of Arabisation and new intentions to institutionalise English. The basic aim is to point out the actual status of French in contemporary Algeria, in terms of its factual and functional use both socially and administratively. For that, an overview of the penetration of French in the Algerian context is given, followed by a clear description of the actual sociolinguistic landscape of the country. A reading of the authentic image of the status of French, in comparison to Arabic and English, is made, to locate the debate on the increase of the spread of French and the causes behind that.
