De-orientalization Of The Self Through Intertextuality In Diana Abu Jaber’s Crescent And William Shakespeare’s Othello
Résumé: "De-orientalization" involves rejecting negative Orientalist perspectives on the East, including Arab culture. Influential Arab American writers, like Edward Said, emphasize the impact of misrepresented Orient narratives in the West. Arab American writers, such as Diana Abu Jaber, aim to present authentic and nuanced identities, challenging stereotypes and fostering understanding within their communities. Abu Jaber, in her novel Crescent, uses intertextuality and focuses on Arab cultural heritage to de-orientalize the self and counter prevailing narratives. This contributes to a more accurate and diverse representation of Arab American identity.
