Uncovering The Ideology Of Translating Diplomatic Texts: Case Study Of The 1816 Peace Treaty Between Great Britain And The Regency Of Algiers

Résumé: On the 28th of August 1816, the Regency of Algiers signed a treaty of peace with Great Britain. It was concluded after the bombardment of the city led by Britain and the Netherlands to end tribute payment and slavery practice. The Dey of Algiers was then in no position to refuse the presented treaty. The translation of this treaty played a great role in ratifying and bridging linguistic and cultural gaps between states. It is believed that, in the Regency of Algiers, this was the first translated treaty into Arabic. In this paper, we will have a closer look at the translation of the 1816 Peace Treaty. We will analyze examples from the original English version and the Arabic translation to understand the strategies employed by the translator(s) to navigate ideological challenges.
