Teaching Third Year Secondary Students Grammar Using The Competency Based Approach
Résumé: English teachers are always in charge for achieving their learners' grammatical competence, most of them have insufficient training and are not aware of the competency -based approach principles. So they rely on traditional teaching approaches for teaching grammar. This research work aims at analysing the mplementation of competency-based approach while teaching grammar to secondary school learners. It focused on identifying the difficulties that secondary school teachers face in implementing that approach while teaching grammar, to be able to suggest solutions for improving grammar teaching in secondary education. The present research consists of a teacher’s questionnaire and an interview. The findings showed that teachers are aware about competency-based approach principles and most of them have been trained to teach under this approach, but the learner’s low level of proficiency, large class size and time constraint, and the lack of teaching materials are all obstacles that hinder its application while teaching grammar. Many efforts should be done by the Ministry of Education, inspectors as well as teachers for the success of competency –based approach in Algeria.
