Which Language For Which Culture? British West Africa As A Case Study

Résumé: Pre-colonial Africa had its own socio-economic and political institutions which developed through centuries, long before European advent. When the Europeans imposed their domination over African territories, they introduced new forms of government and production, new ideas and ways of life and new languages which impinged upon the old ones and often brought about their decay. More than anything else, western education and Christian proselytism pushed native culture into the background. It is then worth analyzing African people’s reactions to this process of erosion. To limit the scope of this research work, the case of British West Africa only will be put under scrutiny.
