Women Misrepresentation In The British Tabloid Press: The Daily Mail As A Case Study.
Résumé: This dissertation deals with the portrayal of women in the British tabloid newspaper The Daily Mail. Through the analysis of The Daily Mail’s portrayal of women, our work demonstrates how the media discourse as well as the ideal body image is used to disempower and marginalize women in the British society. This work relies on Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (1995) which investigates how discourse can be used to exercise power and dominance over people. In order to explain how women are sexually objectified in The Daily Mail, we have used Naomi Wolf’s The Beauty Myth (1991) as a supporting theory. This work constitutes of four main sections: the first one is about the evolution of the Daily Mail from its foundation to the present day. The second section deals with the underrepresentation and the misrepresentation of women in The Daily Mail. The third section is devoted to the coverage of violence against women in the British Tabloids and how The Daily Mail as a sample covers this type of issues. Finally, the fourth section deals with the effects of the promoted ideal body image on the physical and psychological side of women as well as young girls. As a conclusion, it is found that The Daily Mail which targets mostly women represents them and treats their issues according to stereotypes and myths that contribute in their oppression
