Human Rights In Rhetoric And Practice

Résumé: Abstract: The ‘War on Terror’, launched by President George W. Bush following the 9/11 attacks, continued under President Barack Obama with some changes in strategy, tactics, and policy focus. Both Bush and Obama have consistently highlighted human rights as core to American values and leadership. Nonetheless, both administrations faced difficulties aligning their human rights rhetoric with their actions. The work seeks to expose the hypocrisy of the U.S. regarding human rights by highlighting the disconnect between its human rights rhetoric and its actual policies. In doing this, the study uses discourse analysis and qualitative data. The tactics and policies of the ‘War on Terror’ were oppressive and unjust, worsening the situation. U.S. anti-terrorism efforts frequently violated human rights, leading to the perception that the ‘War on Terror’ increasingly became a ‘War of Terror’.
