The Empowerment Of The Black Panther Party Under Algerian Postcolonialism 1969- 1972
Résumé: The present study probes into the nature of the Black Panther Party's relationship with Algeria's postcolonial regime by highlighting the intersections of Black Panthers’ revolutionary internationalism, anti-colonial vernacular and Algeria’s Pan-Africanism and Postcolonialism. The focus of this dissertation is to unravel the motivation behind Algeria's support for the Black Panthers and how it materialized culturally and politically throughout their stay. Exploration of the ideology and influences behind the Black Panthers’ asylum and international activism in Algeria are helpful to assess the impact of Algeria’s revolutionary history in shaping the Black Panthers Party’s counter-hegemonic rhetoric as well as to debate its potential influence on current revolutions, namely, the Hirak. Tracking the geopolitical shifts in Algerian foreign policy and gendered controversies in the Black Panther Party is equally crucial to weigh up the downfall of the Panthers in Algiers and its consequences on Pan-Africanism and anti-racist sentiments in Algeria. This research reveals that Algeria’s monetary, political and cultural contribution to the empowerment of the Black Panther Party created the perfect environment for its transnational launch as a liberation movement and bridged the gap between liberation movements and the civil rights movement.
