Résumé: The present study aimed to investigate the intricate relationship between self-criticism and avoidant personality disorder among university students while concurrently examining potential variances in avoidant personality disorder based on gender, age, and academic specialization (scientific or humanities). Employing a representative sample of 140 male and female students from diverse faculties affiliated with Gacemi Marbah University in Ouargla, the participants' ages spanned between 18 and 50 years, with an average age of 22.76. The sample consisted of 60 male students (42.90%) and 80 female students (57.10%). Academic specialization-wise, 61 students pursued scientific majors, whereas 79 students were enrolled in humanities disciplines. The study employed the Self-Criticism Scale, an instrument consisting of 28 carefully crafted items, developed by esteemed researchers Ahmed El-Husseini Helal and Dunia Ali Saeed in 2020. Additionally, the Avoidant Personality Disorder Scale for University Students, meticulously designed by researcher Hania Munir Abdullah in 2021, encompassing 38 items, was utilized. Following rigorous statistical analysis of the collected data, the ensuing outcomes emerged: (1) a statistically significant association between self-criticism and avoidant personality disorder within the study cohort was established; (2) no notable disparities in avoidant personality disorder were discovered between male and female participants; (3) age was not identified as a salient factor contributing to avoidant personality disorder within the participant group; and (4) academic specialization failed to manifest significant variances in avoidant personality disorder. These findings significantly contribute to the current understanding of the intricate interplay between self-criticism and avoidant personality disorder, while elucidating potential gender, age, and academic specialization differentiations.
