An Investigation Of Algerian University Efl Students’ Accent Awareness And Perceptions Of Native-english Accentsاستقصاء آراء طلاب اللغة الإنجليزية الجامعيين حول أهمية اللكنة واتجاهاتهم نحو لهجات اللغة الإنجليزية

Résumé: Promoting EFL learners’ awareness about their own accent and variation in English-native accents is an important aspect of their communicative competence, yet it is often neglected in Algerian universities. Considering the fact that variation in accent can affect comprehension and intelligibility of English, this paper aimed to investigate students of English at Batna university views about this issue. A sample of (115) students participated in the study, and the findings revealed that (96%) of the participants recognized the significance of improving their English pronunciation, with (62.6%) of them aiming for a native-like accent. Additionally, (66.1%) preferred to learn the American accent, and (67.8%) perceived the British accent as more difficult to understand. The paper suggests a need for more thorough consideration of pronunciation and accent in Algerian EFL programs. تعزيز الوعي لدى متعلمي اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية بشأن لهجتهم الخاصة واختلاف اللهجات الأصلية الإنجليزية هو جانب مهم من كفاءتهم التواصلية، ولكنه غالباً ما يتم تجاهله في الجامعات الجزائرية. بالنظر إلى حقيقة أن اختلاف اللهجة يمكن أن يؤثر على فهم ووضوح اللغة الإنجليزية، هدفت هذه الدراسة إلى استكشاف آراء طلاب اللغة الإنجليزية في جامعة باتنة حول هذه المسألة. شاركت عينة من (115) طالباً في الدراسة. وكشفت النتائج أن (96٪) من المشاركين يعترفون بأهمية تحسين نطقهم في اللغة الإنجليزية، حيث يهدف (62.6٪) منهم للحصول على لهجة شبيهة باللغة الأصلية. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، يفضل (66.1٪) تعلم اللهجة الأمريكية، و (67.8٪) يرون أن اللهجة البريطانية أكثر صعوبة في الفهم. تشير الدراسة إلى الحاجة إلى مزيد من الاهتمام باللهجة في برامج اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية في الجزائر
