Le Mendiant De Mahfouz, Miroir D’une Société En Mutation : Analyse D’une Adaptation Cinématographique

Summary : This article presents an in-depth analysis of the cinematic adaptation of Naguib Mahfouz’s novel "The Beggar" (Al-Shahhat), directed by Houssam Eddine Mostafa in 1973. The study examines the artistic challenges of translating a philosophically introspective literary work into film, highlighting the narrative and thematic transformations from novel to screen. It explores how existential and nihilistic themes evolve in the adaptation process, with the film introducing explicit sociopolitical dimensions absent from the original novel. The article also focuses on the symbolic representation of female characters and their role in reflecting the tension between tradition and modernity in Egyptian society. Ultimately, the film is shown to offer a visually compelling interpretation of the protagonist’s existential crisis, mirroring the complexities of identity and the search for meaning in post-revolutionary Egypt. Résumé : Cet article propose une analyse approfondie de l’adaptation cinématographique du roman "Le Mendiant" de Naguib Mahfouz, réalisé par Houssam Eddine Mostafa en 1973. Il examine les défis artistiques liés à la transposition d’une œuvre littéraire introspective et philosophique en langage cinématographique, en mettant en lumière les transformations narratives et thématiques opérées lors du passage du roman à l’écran. L’étude explore l’évolution des thèmes existentialistes et nihilistes, ainsi que l’introduction d’une dimension sociopolitique plus marquée dans le film, absente du texte original. Une attention particulière est portée à la symbolique des personnages féminins, qui incarnent les tensions entre tradition et modernité dans la société égyptienne des années 1960-70.
