Résumé: يشرح الأدب المقارن مناطق التلاقي بين الآداب، ويوضح ما يسفر عنه من نتائج في توجيه حركات التجديد الأدبية والفكرية، وقد أفاد الأدب العربي من آداب الأمم الأخرى، وحرص على تنمية وعيه وثقافته وإكمالها والنهوض بهما، وكان للرواية الحظ الأوفر من ذلك، ويعد نجيب محفوظ أحد أقطاب الرواية العربية العالمية، فرواياته وقصصه القصيرة، نقلت القاهرة بأحيائها وسكانها إلى بيت كل قارئ، وصورته التي رسمها عنها، تقارن بسادة الأدب الأوروبي مثل أونوريه دي بلزاك وتشارلز ديكنز، الذي كان له أثر بارز فيه، وخاصة في حبه الكبير للوصف، وتصوير كل ما كانت تقع عليه عيناه، ولذا اعتبر الكثير أن نجيب محفوظ هو ديكنز مصر.
