The Use Of English In The Algerian Administration: Case Of The Department Of English, University Of Tlemcen

Résumé: One of the recent policies that has been established by the Algerian government is the implementation of English in all fields, and the administrative domain is of no exception. In order to explore the significance of the new law, a concrete investigation needs to be established. For this reason, the present paper aims at studying how English is used in the Algerian administration namely that of the Department of English in the University of Tlemcen. The sample includes nine administrators from the department who participated in the development of a glossary that includes a number of words used in the university administration. Results show that English is successfully gaining the ground in the administration of the selected department. Yet, code switching to French and Arabic, for particular reasons as the speaker’s background and the context, is still appearing.
