Translation Of Arabic Collocational Sequences Into English: A Field Study
Résumé: EFL/ESL learners have consistently reported that those learners encounter serious problems in the learning of English collocational sequences. The present study has taken the case of a sample of undergraduate and graduate English majors at the university level and tried to determine the extent to which English majors can use English collocations properly. It also aimed at a characterization of the translational strategies employed by the subjects of this study in their attempts to convey the intended meaning in English. The major findings of the study confirmed that Arabic speaking learners of English at all levels face difficulties in recognizing and producing English collocations. The findings also identified, described and gave ample examples of the major strategies employed by these learners trying to render the Arabic Translational sequences into English. The subjects of this study have also shown the need for explicit instructional focus of the teaching of collocations in school and at the university levels in order to build better translational or communicative competence in English.
