Résumé: Translation has always been the centre of interest for many researchers, yet the way this new module is instructed to L2 English language students, who are not supposed to become pro-fessional translators, has not been fully explored. It is demonstrated that students tend to formu-late ideas in their mother tongue before reformulating them in English without any changes, as they think they are dealing with similar linguistic systems. For this reason, the main objective of this study is to examine how L2 students in the department of English at Mostaganem University deal with translation as a new subject. This investigation concentrates on the impact translation as a new module has on students. It also highlights directionality in translation, whether informants prefer the direct or indirect translation, from English into Arabic or from Arabic into English. It also considers the strategies chosen by students while dealing with some translation problems. Importantly, this paper aims to examine the way students analyse different texts, besides dealing with diverse texts while translating from English into Arabic and vice versa. It also spots the de-gree of influence of L1 in their translation. Moreover, The study aims to find out whether the stu-dents have used Baker's strategies to translate the assigned texts or not. It was found that the ma-jority of students neglected Baker's strategies and resorted to a word-for-word translation since they are influenced by their L1 and it is integral to their mental learning process.
