The Christian Terminology
Résumé: During the High and Late Middle Ages, the Roman Catholic Church was attacked by a number of theologians who introduced new teachings aiming chiefly at modifying its services. The religious movements- that the Reformers launched- were given different names including Catharism, Calvinism, Protestantism, and Puritanism; but each movement helped to extend the preceding one. For instance, Puritanism in England is considered only as a continuation of the preceding religious changes, and not a new movement. The Protestant groups agreed on one point which was the fact that the Roman Catholic Church was corrupt and Christ was its head not the Pope. In addition, they agreed about the importance of the Scriptures in people 's life. To sum up, hostility towards the Roman Catholic Church resulted in the birth of different sects, the most conspicuous of which was Puritanism. In fact, it is of some interest to note that the Puritan ideologies were not similar. A group of Puritans- called Separatists, Non-Conformists, and Independents believed that religious purity required renouncing the Church of England, whereas another group of Puritans believed in the possibility of the reform, and had no intention of breaking with the Anglican Church
