Résumé: يتذبذب مصطلح العلمانية بين المقصود الديني، والمعنى السياسي. كما ينشطر بين التعاريف النظرية، وواقع التطبيق. يعاني مسلمو أوروبا المعاصرة من التعامل المزدوج ذي الوجهين من قبل مؤسسات العَلمانية رغم أنه من المفترض نظريا في العلمانية الأوروبية الحديثة أن تعامل كل الأديان بدرجة واحدة. لمعالجة هذه الإشكالية سيتم البحث استقرائيا ونقديا عن أصل المصطلح، وسمات العلمانية الأوروبية، هل توجد علمانية متشددة، تملصت مما وضعته في دساتيرها، وهل لازالت هناك رواسب وبقايا للمسيحية في السلطة تعكر ما تزعم العلمانية في تحقيقه؟ وكيف تطبق في المجالين الديني والسياسي؟ The term secularism fluctuates between the religious and the political meanings. It also splits between theoretical definitions, and the reality of presentation. Contemporary European Muslims suffer from the double-standard treatment by the institutions of secularism, although, in theory, modern European secularism is assumed to treat all religions equally. To address this question, Etymology and characteristics of European secularism will be inductively and critically investigated. Is there a hard secularism that opposed to its constitution, and are there still residues of Christianity in power, that disturb what secularism claims to achieve? How is it applied in the religious and political spheres?
