Identity Crisis And Self-construction In Jean Rhys’ Wide Sargasso Sea
Résumé: Literature develops profound notions that reflect the social and personal life. Over the course of time, the form and content of literary works delivered a reflective image of the changes that occurred providing rich contexts to study various aspects concerning the concept of identity. This research analyzes the crisis of identity and self-construction in Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea. This is especially important to understand the complexities behind women's attitudes and status under racial, sexist, and colonial oppression. Moreover, this study is highly significant in the way it supports the revalorization of a woman's status in the society. The aim of this work is to shed light on the main character, Antoinette and to investigate the patterns and methods that contribute in her identity crisis as well as self-construction. The use of Psychoanalytic and Postcolonialist approaches provides an adequate exploration of these two concepts in the narrative. This study projects more attention to the complications that form Antoinette's identity crisis and analyzes in details her self- construction process.
