Résumé: The overall objective of the current study is to investigate the effectiveness of using English subtitled movies as a successful vocabulary building material. The study aims also to explore secondary school students’ perceptions towards the use of ESMs for learning English in general and vocabulary in particular, as it attempts to derive their suggestions to better improve vocabulary learning through ESMs. To achieve the study aims, the researchers adopted the quasi-experimental approach using pre-post tests on the target vocabulary. The sample study consisted of 32 second year foreign languages students at Saadi Seddik Secondary School (Tebessa). A selected movie with English subtitles was used in teaching the experimental group, while the traditional method was used in teaching the control one during the second term of the academic year 2019/2020. The paired sample t-test was used to analyze the findings. A questionnaire was administered to the experimental group students to explore their perceptions after the treatment. The collected data from this questionnaire were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The study findings revealed that using ESMs has a significant effect on secondary school students’ vocabulary development. The findings also pointed out that secondary school students have positive perceptions towards the use of ESMs for learning English in general and vocabulary in particular as they provided some important suggestions to better improve vocabulary learning through ESMs. Based on the findings, the study recommended the necessity of implementing ESMs in secondary schools.
