Decolonial Representations Of Urban Space In Tommy Orange’s Wandering Stars (2024) And Janet Campbell Hale’s The Jailing Of Cecelia Capture (1985)

Résumé: This article presents a comparative analysis of Tommy Orange’s Wandering Stars and Janet Campbell Hale’s The Jailing of Cecelia Capture. It examines the evolution of the literary representation of the decolonization of urban spaces from the twentieth century to the twentieth-first century. Reading through the indigenous theoretical lenses of the “Native hub” and “dual diaspora”, the central argument posits that Hale’s early urban novel portrays Cecelia’s personal journey navigating ideological and spatial diaspora in both the reservation and the city, ultimately calling for the creation of an urban Native hub. Orange’s most recent literary work ; however, presents a more nuanced decolonial representation of the city as a space for familial and intertribal connection , historical trauma recovery and indigenous cultural revival, thus embodying a fully-fledged Native hub for Native Americans in the U.S.A.
