Résumé: مع بداية النشاط التجاري للقوى الأوروبية خلال القرن الخامس عشر، لعب الدين دورًا رائدًا في تطوير ودعم وتشريع تجارة الرقيق عبر المحيط الأطلسي. حيث تجذر لدى المؤسسات الدينية اعتقاد بأن واجبها في نشر المسيحية يبرر أفعالها، ما دفع بها لأن تكون طرفا رئيسيا في تبني ونشر فكرة الاتجار بالبشر واستعباد ملايين الأفارقة، بل والمشاركة في تطوير هذا التجارة بغرض تكوين الثروة. تهدف الورقة البحثية إلى إبراز الدور الذي لعبته الكنيسة الكاثوليكية في تطوير، تشريع، تبرير وازدهار تجارة الرقيق عبر المحيط الأطلسي. توصلت الدراسة إلى أن الأسس اللاهوتية، تعاليم بولينPauline حول العبودية، و لقب خادم الربthe servant of God، شكلت جميعها مرتكزات الكنيسة الكاثوليكية في بناء تعاليمها حول العبودية و إزدهار تجارة الرق عبر المحيط الأطلسي. With the beginning of the commercial activity of the European powers during the XV century, religion played a leading role in the development, support, and legalization of the transatlantic slave trade. Religious institutions are rooted in the belief that their duty to spread Christianity justifies their actions, which led them to be a major party in the adoption and dissemination of the idea of human trafficking and the enslavement of millions of Africans, and even participate in the development of this trade for wealth creation. This research paper seeks to highlight the role religion, particularly the Catholic Church, played in the development and legitimization of the transatlantic slave trade. A study found that theological foundations and Pauline teachings on slavery, along with the servant of God, formed the foundations for the Catholic Church's teaching on slavery and transatlantic slave trade.
