Sociolinguistic Study Of Skikda’s Dialect In Algeria: Case Of Gender Neutrality In Interrogative And Imperative Statements

Résumé: The current sociolinguistic study explores the phenomenon of gender neutrality in imperative and interrogative statements within Skikda’s dialect. Unlike Modern Standard Arabic and other Algerian dialects, Skikda’s dialect employs gender-inclusive language in performing commands and questions, lacking explicit gender markers. The research aims to investigate the factors influencing dialectal variation among Skikda resident by employing interviews and questionnaire, this article seeks to uncover the motivations behind this linguistic shift among diverse age and gender groups within Skikda’s community and the shift towards gender-marked language when interacting with outsiders.
