Reconsidering The Focus On Teaching The Speaking Skill At Algerian Middle Schools

Résumé: The primary objective of English language instruction is to provide students with the capacity to communicate effectively and accurately in English. Actually, many language learners are highly driven to learn English and continue their studies with passion. However, when real- life circumstances happen in which English may be utilised, many EFL students are unable to communicate. As a result, this study is devoted to investigating the extent of the importance of speaking skill and teaching it in middle schools, as well as the extent to which communication disability influences EFL learners' speaking, it also aims to investigate the psychological as well as linguistic elements that influence learners' performance. To that aim, data were obtained from 60 fourth-year middle school students at Ibn Rouchd Middle School in Ain Beida and 30 English teachers from ten middle schools. The research instruments used in this study were two questionnaires, one for teachers and one for students. The acquired data were quantitatively analysed. The study's findings indicated that reconsidering teaching speaking to middle school students may improve their oral ability. Furthermore, it was revealed that attitudes toward the English language, learner personality, subject, teacher, task type, and connection with the interlocutor are all elements that have a significant impact on students' speaking processes. Finally, the study was anticipated to assist students in recognising the speaking component and improving their performance in speaking classes.
