Elizabeth Gaskell's Wives And Daughters : The Relationship Of Fiction To Reality
Résumé: Could a novel be a critical reflection about writing? What are the movements or genres Elizabeth Gaskell is talking about; verse; prose; "Romanticism"; "Realism"? Did one of these movements die away and leave space to the other or are they mixed up and interrelated? Can we consider Wives and Daughters as not only a work of fiction but beyond that; as metafiction? How did the writer manage to write about fiction within her fiction? Through the story of Molly Gibson whom we see growmg up m Hollingford Mrs. Gaskell seems to tell the reader about another story; that of the development of the novel as a genre. She personifies the genre in Molly and the other literary movements such as romanticism and realism are epitomized by the other characters. Therefore, in Wives and Daughters there seems to be a constant life/literature relationship.
