Résumé: The Algerian Sahara is a best suited to the production of photovoltaic energy due to the abundant availability of sunlight throughout the year. However, it has a dry climate with high ambient temperatures of more than 50 °C, particularly during the summer season, which results a significant reduction in the energy efficiency of the photovoltaic modules during this season. It is necessary then to monitor the endurance and reliability of solar systems in the Saharian environment. This project presents an evaluation of the performance of several photovoltaic modules of the type (UDTS-50) after an exposure period of almost 21 years under the real conditions of the Saharan environment (Adrar region). This approach is based on the characteristics I-V of the photovoltaic modules tested, the characteristics obtained, have been translated for the standard test conditions (STC) in order to estimate the performances of the modules tested for the same reference conditions. As well as the detection of defects by a visual inspection method, which helps us to detect many types of defects in photovoltaic modules. Analyzes of the characteristics of these modules and the values of their degradation factors showed a marked reduction in their performances, in particular, the maximum powers and the form factors. On average, these modules showed an estimated degradation at about 23.16 % and an annual rate degradation of 1.09 % per year, compared to a reference module of the same type. We can consider that the average rate estimated for the degradation of the modules is acceptable. This study will also provide a useful information to manufacturers and owners that could help to better understand the degradation mechanisms and therefore to improve the long-term reliability of photovoltaic modules in the Algerian Sahara.
