Energy Transition In Algeria: Opportunities And Challenges

Résumé: Since the beginning of the current century, the world has been witnessing significant transformations in the energy system. The excessive exploitation of non-renewable fossil fuels has led to various environmental issues, making the energy transition an inevitable solution. In this context, and similar to many other countries, Algeria has developed programs to harness its available renewable energy sources to achieve energy transition and security. However, the results have been modest despite the resources allocated. The reasons for this include several challenges and obstacles. Politically and economically, Algeria's economy heavily relies on hydrocarbon revenues. Technologically, the exploitation of renewable energies requires advanced technology that Algeria does not yet possess. Socially, the lack of community involvement in the transition process could be a barrier. Finally, there is the issue of environmental protection and the increasing importance of balancing social and economic development with environmental preservation. The path toward energy transition in Algeria appears to be long and complex, given its political and economic specificities. It requires structural transitions and changes at multiple levels.
