Effects Of An Instructional Model On The Improvement Of Efl Students’ Critical Thinking Skills For Reading Historical Documents

Résumé: Abstract الملخص شغلت مهارات التفكير النقدي حيزا كبيرا من الاهتمام لدى المختصين في التربية في القرن العشرين والواحد والعشرين. ويحث هذا الاهتمام الذي انتشر بغية إنماء القدرات النقدية لدى الطلاب على تقديم تعليم يتجاوز كونه مجرد نقل للمعلومات من المدرس إلى الطالب، إلى ضرورة تنميته للمعارف والمهارات المرتبطة بالتفكير النقدي. ففي دروس مادة الحضارة مثلا، يعد تطوير الفكر النقدي لدى الطلبة الدارسين للغة الانجليزية كلغة أجنبية ضرورة ملحة من أجل مساعدتهم على مسايرة التعليم الذي يتلقونه والطريقة التي يزاولون بها دراستهم. لذلك نقوم في هذا العمل على سبر كنه مفهوم التفكير النقدي وأهمية تحسين مهاراته لدى الطلبة. كما نبين نتائج دراسة تجريبية تمت على مستوى قسم اللغة الانجليزية بجماعة البليدة من أجل تقييم آثار تقديم تعليم صريح حول عناصر التفكير النقدي واستراتيجيات القراءة النقدية خلال درس مادة الحضارة لطلاب السنة الأولى (ل.م.د). وقد كشفت هذه الدراسة أن تكوين طلبة السنة الأولى إنجليزية حول العناصر و الاستراتيجيات الخاصة بالتفكير النقدي، قد دعم قدراتهم في التفكير النقدي و طور من أدائهم والتزامهم داخل القسم. ويخلُص هذا العمل في الأخير إلى توصيات هامة تهدف إلى تشجيع المدرسين والإداريين على إدراج التفكير النقدي في برنامج السنة الأولى إنجليزية من أجل تعليم وتكوين فعالين في مادة الحضارة. Abstract Critical thinking skills are highly extolled and have received a wide attention among educators in the 20th and the 21st centuries. This widespread interest in nurturing students' critical capacities calls for an instruction that goes beyond a mere transmission of knowledge from teacher to student, to also include the development of the knowledge and the skills associated with critical thinking. In civilization courses, fostering EFL students' critical thinking skills is vital for helping them cope with what they learn and how they learn it. This paper explores the concept of critical thinking and the importance of enhancing students’ critical thinking skills. It also reports the findings of an experimental study conducted in the Department of English at Blida University to assess the effects of infusing an explicit instruction in critical thinking elements and critical reading strategies into a first-year LMD civilization class. This study revealed that training EFL first-year students in the elements and the reading strategies associated with critical thinking greatly impacted their performance and commitment in class. This paper ends with significant implications aimed at encouraging educators to integrate critical thinking into the LMD English curriculum for effective learning and teaching of civilization. K
