Space And Resistance In Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway (1925) And Fatima Mernissi’s The Veil And The Male Elite (1991)

Résumé: This study aims to deal with the concept of space in Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway (1925) and Fatima Mernissi’s collection of essays The Veil and the Male Elite (1991). To support my research, I have relied on Jurgen Habermas’s theory of space The Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere: an Inquiry into Category of Bourgeois Society (1989). I have dealt with the authors’ biographies and the circumstances that influenced them to become writers. They portrayed their female characters in struggle with the patriarchal society and different conditions that deepened their distancing from the public sphere. I have also discussed the way they raise the issue of private and public sphere in their works in the light of the historical and literary context that influenced the writing of both Mrs. Dalloway (1925) and The Veil and the Male Elite (1991). Finally, I have studied the private and public space in both Woolf’s and Mernissi’s works. The affinities that gathered both authors is the relationship between space and gender in the context of space theory and the way they express their resistance.
