Lethal Crossings And Diasporic Shaping Of The African Dream In Laila Lalami’s Hope And Other Dangerous Pursuits
Résumé: ABSTRACT This study examines lethal crossings, or what is referred to as Harraga, in Lalami’s Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits (2005). In her short stories, the Moroccan writer depicts the socio-economic motives that cause illegal crossings of her young characters. Hence, the study attempts to explore illegal immigrants’ strive for better chances and opportunity. Owing to the nature of this study, the dissertation in hand resorted to the socio-economic approach that is concerned with investigating the ways in which the socio-economic problems of a particular society influence the behaviour of its people. This research is important as it revolves around a very critical topic which is illegal immigration, notably in Moroccan society. The study demonstrates that unemployment, poverty, and corruption are the main determining factors that push the characters to engage in a perilous journey towards the unknown in pursuit of their hopes.
