The Presence Of Myth About ‘’the Other’’ In The American Political Discourse. Case Study:
Résumé: This study aims to taking a fresh look at the political myth about Arabs and Muslims through their representation in,both,American political institutions and Hollywood production. Moreover, this research attempts to investigate how this myth is reshaped to meet the demands of an intended agenda about War on Terror. To this end, a literature about some pertinent ideas and historical background , about : the clash of civilization ; the misrepresentation of the ‘’Other’’ ; the American exceptionalism ; CRT and Islamophobia , is reviewed. In order to describe, explain ,analyse and interpret our data, a descriptive and qualitative method is adopted , as it is the most applicable to our research typology .Three before 9/11 attacks films are selected, which are : True Lies ; Executive Decision and The Siege ; besides; two after 9/11 attacks George W.Bush’s rhetorics . One research instrument is used while collecting needed data ,which is the note taking while observing instrument .The study adopts two models of analysis .First , the semiotic Barthes’and Peirce’s models ; to analyse 21 selected scenes .Second , Fairclough’ s three-dimentional model of CDA ; to analyse Bush’s two 9/11 attacks speeches. Findings reveal that ,both, Hollywood three selected films and Bush’s two rhetorics , perpetuate Islamophobic representations against Arabs and Muslims .They both correlate violence to Islam , strengthen the clash of civiliation and highlight the narratives of ‘’Otherness’’ and American exceptionalism . According to our projections , we conclude that Hollywood is ,not simply a leisure activity to entertain viewers , but it’s rather a means used by certain lobbies to normalise and insert a particular ideology in the subconsciousness of the common mass. Another confirmation to our hypotheses , is that Bush’s discourses are shaped by institutional and power relations sustained by the working on pre-exiting myth about Arabs and Muslims. Thus, this myth gets its power and legitimacy to determine how American society acts in the real world towards War on Terror.
