The Israeli-iranian Rivalry And Its Impact On The Iran Nuclear Deal
Résumé: Under the regime of the Shah, rapprochement between Iran and Israel was strong in several fields. However, their partnership deteriorated after the Islamic Revolution that denied the Jewish state’s legitimacy. Moreover, the end of the Cold War and the Iraqi defeat had profoundly affected the geopolitical order of the Middle East, in which Iran and Israel deemed each other as rivals for leadership. Their diplomatic and political relations have worsened recently, heightening the risk of military confrontation. Israel perceives Iran as a threat to the Jewish state’s existence while Iranian leaders perceive Israel as a threat to their regional aspirations. Several factors have contributed to the stalemate between both states, including the Iranian nuclear programme. Israel has been concerned with Iran’s acquisition of a nuclear weapon and insisted on the full cessation of the suspected nuclear programme. In 2015, major world powers succeeded to achieve a nuclear agreement to resolve the nuclear impasse. This article examines Israel’s contradiction to the nuclear deal reached in 2015. It analyses the drive behind Israel’s eadeavours to halt the agreement. It addresses Israel’s concerns with the effectiveness of the deal and its impact on its national security interests.
