Energy Transition And Sustainable Development In Algeria
Résumé: This study aims to understand Algeria's approach, as a major fossil fuel exporter, to the dual challenge of maintaining its hydrocarbon-dependent economy while shifting to renewable energy to meet its climate commitments and meet growing domestic demand. With abundant solar and wind energy resources, the country has set ambitious targets, including 15 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2030, to diversify its energy mix and reduce carbon emissions. However, progress has been hampered by bureaucratic delays, reliance on fossil fuel subsidies, and inadequate electricity grid infrastructure. This paper examines Algeria's energy transition strategies, its key renewable energy projects, and policy frameworks, while addressing the economic and institutional barriers to sustainable development. The findings highlight the need to enhance private sector engagement, international investment, and regulatory reforms to accelerate Algeria's transition to a more sustainable energy future.
