Résumé: The phenomenon of urban sprawl, which has resulted from uncontrolled sprawling urbanization is one of the most important manifestations of urban growth today. The purpose of this thesis lies in the understanding of the formation of urban spaces and in the characterization and measurement of urban sprawl on a scale of the city of Batna, In this respect, this work illustrates the way in which the space of Batna has been shared since its creation. In addition to that, it clarifies the study of the process of evolution of the urban structure and its various spatial mutations. For the study of the diachronic nature, it was based on the use of multi-dales sources. It allows both qualitative and quantitative monitoring of the major stages of the spatial evolution of the city, and consequently the nibbling of agricultural land under the effect of the development of artificial surfaces. A second research approach is devoted to the precise measurement of urban sprawl through two types of density, Urban sprawl is mainly considered as a demographic approach based on population density, and as a geographical analysis of the city as well, based on the density of buildings Therefore, it seems that monitoring urban sprawl is a relevant indicator that could be used in systems for monitoring the state of the environment. Furthermore, it could serve as a support for urban planners and decision-makers for effective and sustainable urban planning
