The Role Of Political Authority In Shaping National Identity Through Educational Policies: A Critical Analysis
Résumé: This paper explores how educational policies in Algeria have historically been used as instruments of political authority to shape national identity. Through a critical review of literature in Arabic, French, and English, and an analysis of curricular developments since independence, the study traces how the state has used language policy, religious education, and civic instruction to construct a unified national narrative. Drawing on case studies and contemporary debates -including the impact of globalization, youth emigration, and the Hirak protest movement- the paper highlights growing tensions between state-driven identity models and students’ evolving expectations. It argues that education in Algeria continues to serve political ends, often at the expense of inclusivity and pedagogical innovation. The paper concludes with recommendations for a depoliticized, pluralistic approach to curriculum reform and suggests areas for future research on youth civic identity and educational governance.
