Résumé: This study aimed at designing an instrement to detect gifted pupils in mathematics at middle school, and to extract its factorial structure. To achieve the objectives of the study, we followed the descriptive approach. The sample was 341 gifted (192: females, 149: males), whom we chose in a simple random manner, according to the variables of gender and academic level, from the Ouargla and El Oued provincies middle schools. We verified the validity and reliability of the tool (observation grid) in several ways. After analyzing the data using exploratory factorial analysis via the principal components method, and orthogonal rotation by Varimax method, five factors resulted: mathematical creativity; motivation towards mathematics; learning; Leadership; and Mathematical understanding and thinking, which were closely related to the characteristics of the gifted pupils in mathematics. There were no differences in the global structure of the tool between males and females in its general form, except for the difference in the arrangement of dimensions. The results also denoted that there were no differences in the global structure of the tool according to the four levels, except for the difference in the order of dimensions. These indicators of validity and reliability allow to use this tool to be reliable for determine the characteristics of the mathematically gifted pupils at middle school.
